When you have to share difficult things, you might want to ease in and that’s a very good idea. However, you should try to make sure you don’t mince your words. I usually start by learning as much as I can about the person. This knowledge will guide me on the best path to share the difficult thing I have to share with them. They have to hear the news and it is your responsibility to make sure you give them the news as calmly and succinctly as possible.

PROMPT: How do you say difficult things?

To get the best out of your teammates, you should make sure you know what their troubles are. Now, this isn’t easy because people rarely just share what troubles they are facing. However, if you create an atmosphere where everyone knows they can speak up and they will be heard, you are a whole lot closer to knowing what they might be facing. Once you know their troubles, put things in place to solve them.

PROMPT: How do you get them to share their troubles?

If you enter a building know where the exits are. In the same vein, whenever you do anything,  make sure that you know where and when you are going to check out. If you don’t have an exit plan, you might stay stuck in a place you never ever want to be. That’s a bad place to be.

PROMPT: What is your exit plan?

Life would be a lot easier if things were black or white but as you navigate this planet, you find out that life is more grey than either of the two previous colours. There are times we have to do things we aren’t really fans of but for a good reason and there are times things that we do with great intentions might end up being super negative. Life is grey.

PROMPT: Is it always black and white to you? Why?

I am lucky as I’ve never been a fan of perfect. I just want to finish it and once it’s done, I can tweak it and build on it. I learned early on that if I am for perfect, no matter how awesome whatever it is I create might be, I’ll never be satisfied. I’ll feel like something is missing or something isn’t as good as it should or could be. Perfection is a trap. Do your work and then build on the finished version.
